A thriving UK higher education sector benefits everyone. Let’s stop pretending otherwise. When others try to tear us down, we must speak up. Our universities helped build the UK into a global soft power, and it’s high time we reminded everyone. Because UK higher education matters. To all of us.
UK higher education is one of our greatest success stories. A thriving global export. A wellspring of ideas, talent, culture and economic growth.
And yet, if you listen to the louder corners of politics and press, you would think universities are some sort of national shame: over-funded, out of touch, woke, wasteful. Producing snowflake graduates with no real-world value.
It’s nonsense. Wilfully ignorant nonsense. And dangerous, too.
UK HE is not just nice to have; it’s essential. Universities power innovation. They drive social mobility. They underpin local economies. They attract global talent and investment. They shape our cultural life. They generate billions for the Exchequer. They help save lives.
This is the story we need to tell. And tell louder. Because right now too many in our sector are being too polite, too cautious, too reactive. While others fill the airwaves with negativity.
We need to fight back. Not just with press releases and polite rebuttals. But with bold, joined-up, audience-first storytelling that shows the nation what universities truly do for the UK.
Here’s how we should start:
Speak with one voice
The sector is stronger together. Put institutional rivalries to one side. When universities unite around a clear, confident message, it lands. Look at the Made At Uni campaign. More of that, and faster. If our sector falls, we all fall. So build shared campaigns. Share assets. Align messaging.
Fight for the sector, and the future it represents for our young people.
Lead with proof
The facts are on our side. The net financial benefit to the UK economy from the sector stands at over £265billion – and for every £1 invested into HE, £14 is put back into the economy. If that’s not something which delivers a substantial return on public investment, I don’t know what is.
UK HE drives regional growth and fuels innovation. This is gold dust. Use it. Tie it to the things people care about: jobs, health, opportunity, local pride.
Make it human
Big numbers matter, but people connect with people. Universities need to find ways to tell the real stories of lives changed, of breakthroughs made, of communities revitalised, of researchers curing disease, and of graduates starting and building successful businesses. HE needs to show the world a human face that reflects the value it produces for our economy and communities. It is harder to sneer at a sector when it looks and feels like your neighbour, your colleague… even your friend.
Be local and visible
Trust is built close to home. Universities must open their doors and step into their communities. Institutions should be a visible and valued part of local life. When you are woven into the fabric of a place, it becomes more difficult for national commentators to paint you as irrelevant.
Own the UK Higher Education narrative
Stop waiting for attacks to come. Stop being apologetic. Fill the space first. Be bold and proactive. If there is a big skills-related story, then tell it. If there is a local regeneration win, shout about it. If a minister talks nonsense, rebut it with facts and pride. The more we speak up, the less room there is for distortion.
Celebrate cultural value
Universities enrich our society. They are custodians of art, history, music and ideas. They foster debate, dialogue, and critical thinking. They create space for innovation, difference and discovery. Let’s talk about that, and let’s do so loudly. Because a UK without strong universities is a poorer and narrower country.
The higher education sector is far too important to be misrepresented. It’s too vital to the UK’s future to be undermined by ignorance, or misguided ideology. So let’s stop being shy. Let’s rise up, and tell the true story of our wonderful sector. Loudly, proudly – and together.
